[MUSIC] POPPY AJUDHA RELEASES CAPTIVATING VISUAL FOR ‘SHE IS THE SUM’ LIFTED FROM DEBUT EP ‘FEMME’

ANNOUNCES HEADLINE SHOW AT LONDON OMEARA 21ST MAY

Shortly after the release of her debut EP ‘Femme’, Poppy Ajudha delivers a stunning visual for ‘She Is The Sum’. Premiered across Wonderland, It is a visual portrayal of self-exploration set on the backdrop of a gritty yet beautiful London, Poppy entwines you into her story of identity, watch here. Lifted from EP ‘Femme’ this eclectic body of work features last year’s releases Spilling Into You’ ft. Kojey Radical, ‘Tepid Soulplus new track ‘Where Did I Go?’. ‘She is The Sum’ showcases a more boisterous side to Poppy’s views on womanhood and empowerment, a narrative that runs clear through her work. ‘The song looks at opposing ideas which have been cemented into our brains throughout history that liken women and womanhood to ideas of both lust and desire and polarises the male/female binary to that of positive/negative, nature/culture and so on, dichotomies.’

“With this video I tried to visualise the life of a strong independent woman who endures, the narrative is therefore one element of what the song could represent. Here we watch her travel around alone, nomadically but she appears strong and with purpose. Like myself, the character is queer identifying, and through this video she explores her sexuality. Being open is something I’ve struggled with all my life, and this video is my first public portrayal of this side of my sexuality. The idea of putting this in the video scared me quite a lot, I only just told my parents late last year, but I think it is important to talk about the things that scare you; to face yourself. I also think it is important to show others they are not alone in feeling this way if you have the platform to do so. I haven’t felt comfortable with myself for a very long time, I hope LGBTQIA men and women will see this and learn to accept themselves sooner.

The underwater shots are a metaphor for being drenched by your emotion, in over your head, suspended in your own sea of feelings, something I often feel when writing and also how I have often felt about my sexuality growing up. Water imagery is something that often creeps its way into all of my songs and so it felt relevant to visualise this in the video.” Explains Poppy.

Having just supported Tom Misch around the UK including the Roundhouse and Jamila Woods around Europe, Poppy also announces her headline show at Omeara 21st May, purchase tickets here.

Poppy Ajudha is a 22-year-old singer, songwriter and model from South London. Her unique vocal tone and melodies conjure comparisons to many classic jazz and soul singers. Combining this with her ability to sound fresh and exhilarating sets Poppy apart and places her at the forefront of the South London music scene– the most fertile and important scene in Europe right now. With a Saint Lucian born British father and British mother she grew up with a diverse set of influences and ideas. Musically, while her dad played a lot of Motown and Roots Reggae, her mother familiarized her to rare groove, funky and soul music through the tapes she’d play during long car journeys to visit family. Also through her mother, Poppy was introduced to feminism – independence and strength were felt through the way she bought Poppy and her sisters up.
